TV Series & Movies… struggle to keep up? I sure do.
The more media streaming subscriptions I acquire, the more I lose track of what I am watching, what I want to watch next and most importantly… Where am I watching it?
Enter Sofa & Sequel. Apps to keep track of what you are watching, where you are watching it, your progress with it and also when are new seasons returning. On the paid option you also get links to where the particular shows/movies are streaming.
I will admit they are quite similar in some respects. But there are definite features in one that aren’t in the other and some that I think potentially are the deal breaker, with one being a clear winner in my opinion.
I initially started with using Sofa, then on a late night rabbit hole of looking for new apps came across Sequel. I have been using both for about 6 months now side by side for testing and now feel I have used them enough to give an opinion/recommendation on them!
Sofa
Sofa was the first app I started using for tracking after seeing it was being recommended from Stephen Robles (Primary Technology Podcast Host).
The options available for Sofa when subscribing via the Apple App Store are:
- £4.99 Per Month
- £29.99 Annually
- £140.99 Lifetime
It bases its organisation method around “The Pile”, “Logbook” and then with lists created by the user for the media they want to track. These can be named anything you require such as “Watchlist”, “Netflix”, “Paramount+” etc. This allows a good amount of organisation, allowing you to store anything you’re currently watching in “The Pile”, whilst moving anything you have finished into “Logbook”.
From no lack of looking, I do not believe that Sofa allows you to track the individual episodes of a series you have currently watched similar to a tick list of how far along you are.
As of Wednesday 9 April 2025, Sofa appears to have successfully launched and integrated their Podcast player within the app also. Meaning that now you can listen to your favourite shows and track them all within one app! I played a couple of my favourite shows without hitch so that’s definitely a feature to be taken into consideration between the two app options! It really adds another facet to the app which may in time replace other more Podcast only focused options!
Sequel
Now for the contender! I found Sequel through watching Chris Lawley’s videos on YouTube and have been using it since to track my different media consumption!
The premise remains the same, one place to track what you’re watching, playing and reading. But with one real difference that I think is a game changer. You can track the individual episodes of series as you are watching them. Literally episode by episode. It’s simple, easy to do and becomes second nature when you get into the habit of it. Equally, this then shows when series are returning or when subsequent episodes are released if they are shown week by week.
The pricing of Sequel remains similar with the below options giving a variety of options in terms of payment when subscribing via the Apple App Store:
- £2.79 Per Month
- £18.99 Annually
- £99.99 Lifetime
With a similarity to Sofa you can track multiple different media sources within Sequel such as Movies, Series, Podcasts, Games and Books. Both do this whilst incorporating a great search feature to find your media and flawlessly links the artworks and data from anything you may be watching.
Would I Recommend?
So, that now leaves the big question. Which one would I choose?
Don’t get me wrong, both of these are great apps that both nail on the service of tracking the media you’re currently consuming. But for me personally there is one that just edges itself into pole position.
Sequel
From a top level look at the two, Sequels ability to visually track the individual episodes you are watching (I watch A LOT of TV) really does give it that edge. It’s also the slightly cheaper of the two for this feature which for me personally puts it as a no brainer.
Sofas recent introduction of the Podcast player makes for an attractive offering, but just doesn’t quite do it for me (It’ll take a big change for me to move from Overcast). But I still look forward to tracking the progress and changes from Sofa in the future to see if this could sway me to move everything across.
I appreciate the look at these two apps is quite high level and maybe doesn’t touch on ALL the features that both have to offer (I’m happy to look into them on a deeper level in separate dedicated future posts). But in this comparison I wanted to look at the actual features that someone who had just downloaded the app for the first time would have been looking to use!
